New Resususcitation Council Guidelines

25th January 2007

The Resuscitation Council (UK) – Medical Emergencies & Resuscitation Report

This report highlight the responsibilities that dental practitioners and dental care professionals have in ensuring that their practices are able cope with medical emergencies. Although emergencies are rare, it is nonetheless vital to be prepared.

One of the main points highlighted within this report (page 6) is that "all clinical areas should have immediate access to an automated external defibrillator (AED)"

As a result of this report, we are offering the Defibtech AED Package with High Capacity Battery and FREE paediatric defibrillator pads. The high capacity battery will last for 7 years, whilst the free paediatric pads means that you will be equipped to deal with patients of any age (as it is already supplied with adult pads). The total price of this offer is £1050 Exc VAT.

If you require AED training then we can also offer this. The AED training session is delivered in accordance with the Resuscitation Council (UK) competencies in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of automated external defibrillators. It aims to ensure that all members of staff can identify and deal with clinical emergencies within the workplace and safely use AEDs.

Furthermore, the report also details the "minimum equipment recommended" which should be present in all general dental practices in the UK (page12). Should you wish to purchase this list of medical equipment then we are also able to offer a special price on these.

If you wish to place an order for an AED, book a training session, or order any of the 'minimum recommended equipment', then please contact a member of our sales team on 0845 00 34 212 - we will be happy to help!

New Blood Pressure Monitor Specifically For Pregnancy

4th January 2006

As part of our wide range of blood pressure monitors, we have the pleasure in introducing the Microlife BP 3BT0-A (2) blood pressure monitor. The BP 3BT0-A (2) is the only blood pressure monitor available that is designed specifically for use during pregnancy.
Microlife BP 3BT0-A (2)

The BP 3BT0-A (2) has fully automatic inflation and deflation, and is recommended by doctors specifically for pregnancy.

Up to 20 % of women develop hypertension during pregnancy. This disease (pre-eclampsia or «toxemia») affects the final outcome of about 5 % of all pregnancies. Pre-eclampsia is a disorder that occurs only during pregnancy. This can be recognized by a clear increase in blood pressure and high protein levels in the urine. The measurement precision of this device has been proven clinically in a comprehensive study carried out by Professor Andrew Shennan at St. Thomas’ Hospital, London. This study proved the reading reliability of this monitor during pregnancy and in the presence of pre-eclampsia, making it the first such home-use monitor that is clinically validated for such use and especially suitable for pregnant women.

Furthermore, this blood pressure monitor is perfectly suitable for normal use, meaning that this is still useful after pregnancy or ideal for use by other family members.

This item is ideal for independent midwives who can reliably measure their patient’s blood pressure. This is also suitable for personal use by pregnant women, or by others who simply wish to obtain their blood pressure.

Cash Shortages Threaten NHS Birth Centres

18th November 2005

Multiple Birth Centres across Great Britain are facing the risk of closure due to shortages in midwives and money, the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) has warned.

Birth Centres are staffed by midwives, and are run by the NHS either in the community or linked to hospitals. Last year, many of these Birth Centres experienced a shortage in staffing numbers, as well as cash flow problems – one in four trusts finished last year in deficit.

In recent months, six NHS-run Birth Centres have been closed down – either on a permanent or temporary basis. Indeed recently, two Maternity Units were closed down until April 2006, with the temporary closure being attributed to a shortfall of midwives to staff the facilities. However, both these centres have subsequently recruited the necessary staff on a temporary basis, yet these two Birth Centres, located in Portsmouth, will still remain closed until April, with the reason being due to financial pressure and the need to maintain safety standards.

The NCT has highlighted the need for the Government to recognise this problem and take action. Within Britain, there are about 100 of these centres, which offer more ‘homely’ care than maternity units, campaigners say. The NCT has said that the closures of some Birthing Centres threatens the Governments pledge that by 2009 women will have a choice of where and how they can give birth.

Birth Centres are a popular choice when deciding how and where to give birth, with currently 16% of all UK births taking place within Birthing Centres. Indeed, the head of policy research of the NCT Mary Newburn said, "Birth centres are popular with women and their families. Women tell us that the opportunity to give birth in a birth centre helps them to relax and gives them a positive experience of birth. The government acknowledges this themselves but unfortunately its policy is not being put into practice across the country."

The NCT has also underlined other benefits that these Birth Centres can offer. Mary Newburn said, "We know that access to birth centres helps to increase normal birth and reduces unnecessary medical interventions. In turn this means there are less infections, so both the patient and health service benefits.”

In spite of the recent closures of Birthing Centres (six recently), a Government spokesperson has denied that the 2009 target was at risk.

MidMeds Charity Work - Maternity Worlwide Donation

28th September 2005

As part of MidMeds commitment to giving charity, we are proud to announce that we have recently donated to the worthy charity Maternity Worldwide. Maternity Worldwide is an organization that works to reduce maternal mortality in developing countries.

Maternity Worldwide

Maternity Worldwide currently has a project running in Gimbie, Western Ethiopia, where up to 1 in 7 women die in pregnancy and childbirth. Our donation will be going to the Maternity Unit within Gimbie Hospital, which is run by Maternity Worldwide. Donations will go towards helping some of the poorest people in the world receive appropriate medical attention and a better health education.

MidMeds was alerted to Maternity Worldwide’ fund raising efforts by two midwives from the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. The midwives, Nikki Kutchera and Jane Sethi, are due to undertake a bike ride challenge where they will cycle 320kms throughout some of Ethiopia’s most punishing terrain. The purpose of their efforts is to help raise money towards the Maternity Unit based in Gimbie.

We invite you to help the midwives in their fundraising efforts. For more information please go to www.materntiyworldwide.org or www.justgiving.com/janeandnikki.
